A woman’s morning jog turned into a horrifying ordeal on Friday August 16, when she was attacked, gang-raped, and robbed in Castemil at Carwash area near Githurai 45.
The victim, who usually takes walks during the day, decided to challenge herself by going for an early morning jog.
But When she reached Castemil area, the police report states: “A man armed with a machete came up from behind and grabbed her. Another man approached from the front, and she thought he was going to rescue her. Instead, they both dragged her into a bush.”
They pair demanded her phone password and M-Pesa PIN, which she struggled to remember as she was overcome with fear.
One of the attackers covered her face and raped her while the other went through her phone and mobile banking. After robbing her of her dignity, and cash the men fled and told her to run and not look back.\
Immediate Help and Medical Care
After the attack, some local motorcyclists helped her get home for free. She called a friend, who rushed her to Kasarani Hospital. There, she received immediate medical attention, including emergency medication and vaccinations. She was also advised to get emergency contraception.
Police Shameful Response
The victim’s experience was further marred by the response from the police.
When she reported the assault at Kasarani Police Station, she was met with insensitivity.
An officer reportedly told her, “Madam, thank God you are alive. We have had about five similar cases recently, and we are just coming to pick up the body.”
This comment not only shows that the police are aware of such incidences under their very noses, but also a disgusting lack of empathy and support.
