In May, American comedian Dave Chappelle performed in Kenya to a packed audience at the Louis Leaky Auditorium. It was a night many looked forward to, but not everyone got to see the show. Kenyan comedian Eddie Butita, known for his humor and sharp wit, was one of the disappointed fans.
Butita recently opened up about being banned from attending the event, despite having bought a ticket. In a video shared by SPM Buzz, he explained that he had just returned from a U.S. tour with President Ruto when he received a surprising call from the show’s organizers.
“They called me the day before the event and told me I was banned,” Butita recalled. “They said comedians and anyone linked to the media were not allowed. Maybe they thought we’d steal his jokes.”
He couldn’t believe he had been singled out and asked why. The organizers responded, “You’re so great that these guys know you. They had to check every name, and yours was flagged.”
Butita shared his frustration, expressing disappointment over the ban. Many fans were equally puzzled, questioning the decision to exclude a local comedian from such a high-profile event.
Despite the setback, Butita remains positive, using the experience as another story to tell and maybe, a joke for a future show.
