Who is Arielle Free? Radio 1 DJ who has been suspended after being kicked off air has co-hosted Love Island's podcast, performed at festivals and even appeared on Harry Potter

Arielle Free has been suspended after she was pulled off air by Charlie Hedges during her Saturday’s Dance Anthems broadcast live from the Ibiza Rocks hotel.

The DJ, 36, told Charlie, 37, while on air that she ‘hated’ a song she had just played and kept interrupting her, prompting the host to tell her to ‘have some respect’.

Charlie then told Arielle to get out of her DJ booth, and it was later confirmed that Arielle will not be hosting the early breakfast show this week after talks with the BBC.

A spokesman for Radio 1 told MailOnline: ‘Whilst we would not comment on individual matters, we have strict codes of behaviour for staff and presenters, and any breaches are taken extremely seriously.’

But who is Arielle? From co-hosting the Love Island podcast to rising to success on Radio 1, MailOnline takes a look at the DJ’s career.

Who is Arielle Free?

Scottish DJ Arielle is originally from Stirling but moved to Glasgow when she was just ten years old.

She began dancing at the age of eight and went on to attend The Dance School of Scotland, before venturing into the world of film.

As a teenager, Arielle appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005, taking on a minor role as one of the dancers from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.

Venturing into TV, Arielle then went on to present ITV’s children TV show Scrambled!, and in one episode, Arielle and her team set a world record.

In October 2017, Arielle was among a team who set the Guinness World Record for the most limbos by 25 people in three minutes – achieving 142 limbos as a group.

Arielle then was recognised by the BBC after hosting the Ministry of Sound’s Radio Drive Time for two years from 2014.

She joined BBC Radio 1 back in 2019 and started by hosting the early weekend breakfast slot.

In January 2021, she moved to hosting the Monday to Thursday early shows and has now fronted the programme for two years.

As part of the 2023 summer schedule, Arielle took over Radio 1’s Future Artists shows, which run on Mondays to Wednesdays from 8-10pm.

Arielle is also the voice of Radio 1’s Dance live stream and can be heard on the stage 35 hours a week.

In a huge career step, Arielle famously co-hosted the official Love Island podcast, titled Love Island: The Morning After, alongside Kem Cetinay for three years.

As well as her role as podcast host, she also made appearances on Love Island’s Aftersun to discuss all the latest drama in the villa.

However, earlier this year, Indiyah Polack and Sam Thompson took over as co-hosts on the podcast and are also now regular Aftersun panellists.

A source reportedly said at the time: ‘Arielle has a hectic start to 2023 with her DJ and radio work so as sad as she is to not do the podcast, she is not able to commit.’

Indiyah and Sam returned to front the podcast for the summer 2023 series, after taking over the gig for the winter stint of the show earlier this year.

On top of finding success as a radio and podcast host, Arielle has also toured the world as a celebrated electronic house DJ.

She has performed at the likes of Printworks, Radio 1 Weekend, Creamfields, Parklife and Glastonbury, and is set to return to Creamfields for a gig later this month.

Arielle has also toured with her very own club night, titled Free Your Mind, and has produced her own music in recent years.

In January 2022, she released a single titled Soul Full, which she produced with Bristol music duo Mortimer. The track features vocals by Joe Killington.

Earlier this year, Arielle also raised more than £500,000 for Comic Relief with her Red Nose Day cycling challenge.

She raked in a total of £561,667 for charity by cycling for 50 hours across five cities in five days while DJing – in a feat which was called ‘the Tour de Dance’.

Arielle cycled through York, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool on an adapted 10-person bike which was fully equipped with DJ decks.
