National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has disclosed that Kenya’s parliament has partnered with their Swiss counterpart to boost the trade industry.

In a statement via the National Assembly X account, on Thursday, November 28, 2024, the Speaker stated that the two parliaments will collaborate to put in place mechanisms that would foster and boost free trade.

Wetang’ula, who had earlier hosted the Swiss Ambassador to Kenya Mirko Giulietti in his office at Parliament Buildings, further revealed that a delegation of Swiss Parliamentarians will visit the country in January to kick start the plans.

“Kenya’s National Assembly will collaborate with their Switzerland counterpart to put in place mechanisms that would foster and bolster free trade, and a delegation of Swiss Parliamentarians will visit Kenya in January to commence the engagements,” Wetang’ula revealed.

In addition, he noted that the partnership of the two legislative bodies is expected to add value to Kenya and Switzerland.

“Kenya can benefit a lot from market opportunities in Switzerland through the free trade initiative,” he said.

Kenya and Switzerland’s relationship

The speaker, while welcoming the envoy who is only three months old in the office, pointed out that Kenya and Switzerland enjoy unique similarities of being mini capitals for several Missions in the world.

Commending Switzerland for its admirable neutrality in the conflict that bedevilled Europe, the speaker noted that the move made her the best choice to be the centre of international activities.

He further added that a team of Kenya parliamentary lawyers have come up with a legal framework borrowed from Switzerland on how to manage Nairobi city.
