West Ham have agreed a deal to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on loan for the remainder of the season.

Mailsport previously reported that both clubs were close to an agreement on the English midfielder’s joining until the end of the season.

According to the Athleticsthe Hammers have now agreed a deal that would see Phillips join until the summer – including an option to buy – to give the England star a chance for some much-needed game time ahead of the 2024 European Championship.

Juventus were also interested in a loan move for the 28-year-old, but David Moyes’ side appear to have won the race for his signature after he was linked with a number of teams during this period.

The report claims that personal terms are not expected to be an issue as West Ham will pay Phillips’ full salary at the London Stadium.

Phillips was with the City team at their warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi over the winter break but will now fly back before completing the move.

A number of rival Premier League clubs have expressed interest in Phillips but have been put off by the terms of the deal. It is understood City were initially looking to secure a £6m loan fee for Phillips, in addition to waiving a large percentage of his wages.

There are also concerns that it could take a while for Phillips to regain match sharpness after 18 months out of regular first-team football.

Newcastle and Crystal Palace are among the teams who have looked at signing the 28-year-old.

The Manchester City midfielder has long been on Moyes’ wishlist, even before his £42million move from Leeds United in 2022, and the West Ham boss is hot in his pursuit.

City were willing to loan Phillips out last summer due to interest from the likes of Liverpool, with the loan fee expected to be around £10 million. This window is believed to be around half that, but no less substantial given Phillips’ wages.

However, West Ham remained in the mix, with Moyes confident he could get the best out of Phillips. They have the added bonus of still being in Europe and sixth in the Premier League.
