YY Comedian has revealed that while he and his ex-lover Marya Okoth weren’t legally married, their bond was more than a casual ‘come-we-stay’ arrangement.
Speaking to Milele FM’s Ankali Ray, the filmmaker made it clear that their relationship was built on love, respect, and commitment, just minus the paperwork.
“Let me put that straight and maintain some respect. In as much as we didn’t get married legally, it’s just the documents that we didn’t have. We treated each other as husband and wife. Papers are just a formality,” he declared.
While the legalities of their union were never sealed in ink, YY emphasized that their relationship was far from a fleeting romance.
“I don’t want people going around disrespecting what Marya and I had saying it was a come-we-stay marriage. No, it was not,” he added.
YY’s new lover
Just two months after his highly publicized split from Marya, YY introduced a new love interest to the public. When asked if he genuinely loves the new bombshell in his life, he noted that no one can be with someone they don’t love.
“Everyone wants to be happy every day. Huwezi kuwa na mtu ambaye humpendi. I think about things before I do them,” he said.
YY also shared that he has fully healed from his previous relationship and is ready to move forward and it doesn’t matter how fast he has moved on rather what matters is he was happy and has someone to run home to.
“It does not matter how fast or how long, what matters is how soon do you accept and move on. I work well when I know I have a home to run to. Men don’t want much from women, we just need moral support,” YY expressed.
Adding;
“I have healed, if I felt bad about what happened in my past relationship, I did then. Now, I have healed and moving forward—even my ex-partner knows it.”
Keeping respect
When probed about the reasons behind his breakup with Marya, YY played it cool, refusing to spill any details trashing claims that there was unfaithfulness involved.
“None of that happened, and I honestly do not wish to talk about it,” he said.
He highlighted his commitment to maintaining respect for Marya, especially because they share a child.
“She is the mother of my child, and I’m the father of her child. Nobody is perfect, and there are things that we can’t just air in public. What happened happened, and I have moved on,” he said.
YY said he just wanted to focus on the future and make sure his new relationship flourishes. He made it clear that he had no intention of disappointing his current partner.
“The last thing I want is to disappoint this woman that I am with,” he stated firmly.
Breakup
Marya announced the breakup with YY on Instagram, on Thursday, September 5, 2024. She cited “unavoidable circumstances” for the split and asked fans for privacy.
Marya expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received throughout their relationship.
“Hello and good morning. We are saddened to let you know that Marya Okoth and YY Comedian will no longer be together due to unavoidable circumstances. Thank you for your love and support through our union. We expect individual privacy from each one of you,” Marya said.
The couple shares a 3-year-old daughter. Marya gained fame in 2023 after starring in the viral Kenyan series A Nurse Toto, produced by comedian Eddie Butita.
