‘We know you’ – Ruto claims some NGOs are sponsoring violence in Kenya

President William Ruto now claims some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of sponsoring violence in the country.

Speaking in Nakuru on Monday, July 15, 2024, Ruto claimed that the NGOs had released money aimed at causing chaos to destabilise the country.

“We have no use for anarchy, violence, destruction of property and loss of lives. We know the people sponsoring the violence and I want to call out those who are behind the anarchy in Kenya. Those sponsoring the chaos in Kenya, shame on them,” Ruto said.

“They are sponsoring violence against our democratic nation. We are going to call them out and we are going to tell them if they are not interested in democracy in Kenya, if they are going to sponsor violence, if they are going to sponsor anarchy, they (should) either style up or leave.”

Ruto, while accusing an American NGO of sponsoring violence, has also urged young people not to engage in protests. So far, over 40 people have been confirmed dead due to the protests and hundreds injured.

Duale supports Ruto

In a statement after Ruto’s utterances, former Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale claimed to know about the presence of people causing chaos in the country.

“The sovereignty of our beloved nation is our most valuable shared asset. We will not permit orchestrated acts of violence to disturb the peace we’ve upheld since the birth of the white in our national flag. To those instigating anarchy from the shadows, we know you and we are aware of your schemes,” Duale stated.

This comes ahead of planned protests on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, aimed at pushing for better governance and an end to corruption in government.

Over the last few days, the government has been under pressure to ensure an end to bad governance, excessive taxation and corruption.

The pressure has seen Ruto withdraw the Finance Bill 2024, announce austerity measures and even fire his entire cabinet, only sparing Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Currently,  operations of the government are running under the guidance of Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials.
