Veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho has faulted President William Ruto for denouncing his critics as enemies of state.
Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Gaitho likened Ruto to South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol who declared Martial Law and sent soldiers into the streets after his budget proposals were rejected, but was forced to retreat, and now stares at impeachment.
“South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol declared Martial Law and sent soldiers into the streets after his budget proposals were rejected. He was forced to beat a quick retreat. He will be impeached and possibly Here our President @WilliamsRuto is denouncing critics as enemies of state,” Gaitho stated.

Ruto slams critics
Gaitho’s remarks come a day after President Ruto took a swipe at his critics for opposing the now suspended Adani Group’s deals with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).
Ruto, while speaking in Manga, Taita Taveta County on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, mocked his critics stating that majority of them have yet to step into an airport for whatever reason.
Ruto further criticized his administration’s detractors, indicating that they were quick to criticize yet they had no alternative strategies.
“When you stop the building of an airport in your country na huna mpango mbadala, you have no ideas on how to build any airport and no clue on how it is going to be built. Wale wanapinga airport hata hawajawahi kukanyaga kwa airport hata siku moja,” Ruto said.
The head of state maintained that a new airport shall be constructed, whether the critics liked it or not, noting that he was confident that Adani Group would have have delivered a good job at JKIA.
“Lakini mimi nataka niwahakikishie kuwa airport mpya tutajenga. We are going to build a new airport in Kenya. We may have stopped Adani from doing it. I was confident that he was going to build our airport and that he was going to do a good job,” Ruto stated.
He went ahead to reveal that he had only stopped Adani because of the law that bars Kenya from engaging with people who have cases.
“But because of the law that bars us from engaging with people who have cases, we stopped it but that does not mean we are not going to build the airport. We are going to build the airport. We are going to get a new framework; we are going to get people who believe in this country to build a new airport for us because that is how the future is going to look like,” he stated.
