Verma: Anti-immigrant stance threatens US-India ties

Richard R Verma, the deputy secretary of the State Department and the highest-ranking Indian-American in America’s diplomatic corps, stated that one cannot oppose immigrants while advocating for stronger US-India relations. He warned that demonising immigrants poses a significant threat to bilateral ties.

Verma’s remarks come amid far-right social media influencer Laura Loomer’s attacks on Kamala Harris’s Indian heritage and increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric from Republicans. Speaking at the Hudson Institute, a Washington DC-based think tank, he reflected on the progress in US-India relations over the past 25 years. Key achievements include President Bill Clinton’s decision to separate US-India relations from US-Pakistan ties, the civil nuclear deal, designating India as a “major defense partner,” the evolving security model in the Indo-Pacific and Quad, climate cooperation post-Paris agreement, and the increased movement of people between the two nations.

Verma, a former US ambassador to India, highlighted the contributions of Indian and South Asian communities to American society. He stressed that anti-immigrant views are incompatible with strong US-India economic, security, and cultural ties. He condemned recent racist attacks on Indian Americans, stating such language and behaviour have no place in American society.

Verma emphasised the shared values of social justice in the US-India relationship and the importance of learning from each other to advance these values. He pledged to uphold America as a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive society at every opportunity.

Looking forward, Verma identified emerging technologies and science, the Indo-Pacific architecture, defence and economic cooperation, and people-to-people ties as areas where bilateral relations should deepen. However, he also raised concerns about the growing Russia-China collaboration, suggesting that Russian support could enhance China’s capabilities in the Indo-Pacific. He questioned whether India should continue to pursue ties with Russia, given its declining power and outdated military equipment.

Verma also underscored the need for deeper economic cooperation with clear rules and more government-to-government efforts to ensure transparency and fairness. He highlighted the importance of supporting civil society to ensure freedom of expression and support for every voice.
