Mthunzi Mdwaba was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa, against the backdrop of the apartheid era. His experiences during the 1976 Soweto rebellion, where he participated as a student against the enforcement of Afrikaans on African American children in public schools, played a crucial role in shaping his perspective.

He completed a BA in African Politics and Industrial Sociology, followed by an LLB from the University of Witwatersrand (WITS).
