A tragic accident on Phaholyothin Road in Kamphaeng Phet province claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others injured when a pickup truck swerved to avoid a taxi that was making an illegal U-turn and crashed into a tree. The incident occurred yesterday at 6.20pm and involved a white Isuzu pickup with a Bangkok registration.
Police Lieutenant Ek Srirawat of Songtham Police Station was notified of the accident and immediately went to the scene alongside rescue workers from the Kamphaeng Phet News Image Rescue Unit. Upon arrival, they encountered a scene of devastation: the pickup truck was severely damaged, and all five occupants were trapped inside the wreckage.
The two fatalities were identified as 30 year old Sitthiporn Pinnang, who was driving the vehicle, and 30 year old Warapong Jaemsai, who was in the passenger seat. Both were residents of Nonthaburi province. The injured parties were 30 year old Duangruethai Rungdit, who was in critical condition, along with 29 year old Prachai Kamthong, and 30 year old Anuwat Srijanchom, also from Nonthaburi.
Extricating the victims from the crushed vehicle took an arduous hour, after which the injured were rushed to the hospital. According to the survivors, they had set out from Nonthaburi at 2pm on the same day to attend a monk ordination ceremony in Lampang province. However, as they reached the accident site, a sedan cut in front of them abruptly, causing the driver to lose control and collide with the tree in the central road divider, reported KhaoSod.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from a nearby checkpoint at Songtham Police Station and confirmed the involvement of a green and yellow taxi, which was making a U-turn at a non-designated area. This local shortcut led to the catastrophic event. The taxi’s licence plate was not immediately identifiable, but police are determined to locate the vehicle and proceed with legal action against the driver.
