The CEO of streaming platform Twitch, Dan Clancy, has spoken publicly about the company’s activities recent layoffsand revealed that we are currently “not profitable.”
This came during a community chat hosted yesterday (January 11) on Twitch. Clancy stated: “We’ve suggested this before, where we say we need to run it sustainably, but I’ll be blunt: we’re not profitable right now. Amazon has been very supportive of Twitch and is important to its existence.” Sustainability over time means making sure we don’t lose money.”
On January 10, it was confirmed that the company is laying off more than 500 people. At the time, Clancy said that “it has become clear that our organization is still significantly larger than necessary given the size of our business.”
He added: “This decision, while incredibly difficult and painful, is necessary to ensure we can continue to serve our streamers sustainably without impacting their ability to support their careers on Twitch.”
Back to Clancy’s livestream, and the CEO reiterated his confidence to Twitch users that “we will still be able to meet your needs.”
“We’ve been very focused on continuing to grow Twitch and keep making Twitch where it has been for so long,” he explains. “I want to make it clear that we still have more than sufficient resources, we are still a reasonable sized organization. We can still meet your needs and we can still improve the product.
“We won’t be able to do as much as before, but I think we’ll still see a lot happening in 2024 that you’ll be very excited about. (…) Our focus is on making Twitch the best place to livestream, the best place to build communities.”
