The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a mass requirement of intern teachers in junior secondary schools (JSS).
In a notice on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, the commission said that the additional 20,000 interns who be hired for 12 months will help in the implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC).
The commission further stated that the intern teachers will also be deployed to teach at the Special Needs Education (SNE) schools and be eligible for a monthly stipend of Ksh20,000 which will be paid subject to any government deductions.
“The Teacher Internship Programme is a one-year programme and targets unemployed registered teachers,” the commission announced.
“This is not a remunerative engagement. However, interns attached will be eligible for a monthly stipend of Ksh20,000. The stipend will be paid subject to statutory deductions, where applicable.”
The commission announced that selection will be strictly on merits and based on the number of
vacancies per county and that the successful candidates will be posted to serve in the counties where they were interviewed or in any part of the country where the vacancy exists.
Qualification
According to the requirement commission, all applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a minimum grade of C+(plus) in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and on the two teaching subjects. They must also be registered with the TSC.
“Qualified and trained teachers with technical learning areas/subjects with TSC registration numbers are encouraged to apply,” the commission added.
“Be unemployed and has not previously been employed by the commission on permanent and pensionable terms. Successful candidates shall be required to have personal accident insurance to cover for personal risks during the internship period.”
How to apply
Interested candidates were advised to submit their applications through the TSC website, under “Careers” or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke not later than November 4, 2024, at midnight. Manual applications will not be considered.
Applicants will be required to submit copies of the TSC Certificate, national identity card, National Council for Persons with Disability card for the differently abled applicants, KRA PIN and two passport-size photos.
The announcement comes just a week after the TSC boss Nancy Macharia said that all serving interns will be employed by January 2025.
“All serving teacher interns will be employed on permanent and pensionable terms of service by January,” she said, noting that the employment forms have already been issued.
