Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury at the hands of his own teammate when Walker Little stepped back on him against the Bengals on Monday night.

Lawrence’s own body weight then appeared to force his ankle to twist further, before Bengals player Trey Hendrickson fell on top of him, inadvertently worsening the injury.

Lawrence lay down in pain at first, tried to get up and then fell back to the ground, throwing his helmet on the ground and punching the ground, with a mixture of pain and frustration on his face.

He had to be helped off the field by two trainers, but moved very slowly and immediately went for an X-ray.

The Jaguars said it was doubtful he would return with about three minutes to play, but Lawrence looked ready for the day when he was filmed wincing in pain as he tried to move through the tunnel.

The Jaguars entered Monday night’s game 8-3 for the season with seven wins of their last eight.

But if Lawrence is anywhere near as badly injured as he looked, that would be enough to derail their hopes for the rest of the season.
