Tom Cruise 'barred' Nine news presenter Peter Overton from the Mission Impossible red carpet

It seems Tom Cruise hasn’t forgotten about his notorious 60 Minutes interview with Channel Nine presenter Peter Overton 18 years ago.

Back in 2005, the pair sat down to talk about his movie War of the Worlds, but things turned sour when Overton probed a clearly annoyed Cruise about his ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Cruise lashed out at Overton and accused him of crossing a line.

According to a new report, the Hollywood star barred Overton from attending the Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere in Sydney last week.

Woman’s Day claims Cruise, 61, wanted to make sure his recent trip to Australia was controversy-free so he took a personal interest in the red carpet guest list.

‘Anyone connected to ”That Interview” was scratched off, and Peter Overton was certainly among the people who didn’t get an invite,’ the source claimed.

‘Tom wanted the spotlight on his film, not his past.’

The row between Cruise and Overton ignited during an infamous television interview in 2005, just after his much-publicised divorce from Nicole Kidman.

The actor admonished Overton on live television, stating, ‘You’re stepping over the line, and you know you are.’

He further advised the journalist to ‘put your manners back in.’

Adding fuel to the fire, Overton and his wife, popular TV personality Jessica Rowe, are known to be close with Kidman.

The couple attended a lavish Christmas party at Kidman and her musician husband Keith Urban’s swanky Sydney penthouse last year.

Cruise and Kidman separated in 2001 after 12 years of marriage amid rumours his commitment to Scientology had driven a wedge between them.

The couple adopted two children, daughter Isabella Jane in 1992 and son Connor Antony in 1995, but never had any biological children.

In the 2005 interview for 60 Minutes, Overton asked if Nicole was the ‘love of his life’.

‘I love Nic very much, there’s no question,’ Cruise replied.

‘And do you have a relationship where you talk, it’s a parenting relationship, and talk professionally about each other’s work?’ Overton pressed.

‘Listen, here’s the thing Peter,’ an unimpressed Cruise cut in. ‘You’re stepping over a line now, you know you are.’

Overton tried to tell the actor that his questions are ‘what people want to know’.

‘Peter. You want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know,’ Cruise said.

‘Don’t say “what other people”. This is a conversation I’m having with you right now. So I’m just telling you right now. Just put your manners back in.’

‘Do you think I was out of line?’ a slightly bemused Overton replied.

‘Yes, absolutely,’ Cruise hit back.

Overton ‘apologised sincerely’ for the question and the interview continued.

‘That was a hell of an interview, I’ll never forget it,’ Overton told Nine last year.

‘I held my own and I was happy about that. I didn’t change, that’s who I am. I thought they were fair questions.’

Cruise was pictured in Sydney over the weekend promoting his new film Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

In the movie, the actor performs one of his most dangerous stunts yet – driving a motorcycle off a cliff and then parachuting to the bottom of a mountain.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Tom Cruise, Peter Overton and Jessica Rowe for comment.
