The online feud between Music Copyright Society Of Kenya (MCSK) Chief Executive Officer Ezekiel Mutua and Gengetone artiste Ssaru has intensified as the two keep engaging in a back-and-forth about her ‘dirty’ ‘Kaskie Vibaya’ hit song lyrics.
Mutua, christened the ‘moral cop’, has advised artistes to strive towards creating clean content noting that the timespan for indecent and vulgar content is short.
“The time span for dirty content is short. In the end, content should translate to money and that is where the consumer comes in. Clean is cool!” He wrote in part on his Facebook page.
Mutua slams Ssaru over lyrics
During an interview with Eve Mungai media, Ezekiel voiced his displeasure with the message conveyed in the song ‘Kaskie Vibaya’.
He noted that the song goes against cultural and moral teachings of society.
“People are going through a lot. Have you heard the song about the lady singing ‘Niko napesa na ni ya babako’? What are you telling my daughter?” Dr. Ezekiel Mutua expressed his concerns.
“I am calling on these artists to step up their game. Let their music promote hope and inspiration. Let us not focus solely on likes, shares, and views. Let the song help people find hope and change the course of their lives,” Dr Mutua shared.
Ssaru’s response to Mutua
Ssaru was quick to respond to Ezekiel’s criticism while defending herself, stating that Ezekiel should not be quick to criticize without considering the diversity of her music and the audience she serves.
“If Ezekiel Mutua listened to my other songs, like my recent hit with a Rhumba taste, he would judge it differently,” Ssaru said during an interview with a local blog.
The ‘Kaskie Vibaya’ crooner went ahead to say that she cannot stop making music for her diverse audience just because one person is displeased with her lyrics, emphasizing that he (Ezekiel) should check out her Youtube channel.
“I cannot stop creating songs just because one person didn’t like the lyrics or the song. He should, in fact, check out my YouTube channel,” Ssaru explained.
Mutua fires back
In a lengthy Facebook post, the MCSK boss went ahead to fire back at Ssaru’s response questioning her for ignoring advice from elders.
“So you do a dirty song and it gets to your head to the point where you discard advise from elders and accomplished professionals by dismissing them with a cursory wave of a hand “Kaskie Vibaya na huko kwenu?” He probed.
He went further to say that strangers have massaged her ego and that makes her feel on top while citing that her song is being played during the watershed time against the law.
“Then strangers hype your insults and arrogance on social media and you feel like you are on top of the world. Your dirty song is played on radio stations even during watershed time against the law,” he explained
He also noted that Ssaru gets nothing or if she gets any it’s peanuts from nightclubs and stations that play her song, stating that she is cutting herself from big money since serious co-operates do not associate themselves with indecency.
“It’s the hit in nightclubs. But the stations and nightclubs using your song pay you nothing, or if anything, peanuts.
“Of course, serious corporates don’t associate their brands with vulgarity and indecency so you are clearly cutting yourself off from big money while pleasing strangers on social media,” he said.
He advised that one didn’t need to produce vulgar content for it to sell, saying normalising indecency in the name of fame is a serious deficiency of imagination.
“I will always be true to my character and will advise the youth with love and honesty. Create content that can be consumed by family,” he urged,
In this back-and-forth between the two, Ssaru and Futhermoh who collaborated on the viral song have joined forces to fire back at the MCSK boss.
