Forecasters have warned that thunderstorms and heavy rain later today could lead to flooding, travel disruptions, and power outages. A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office from 4pm to midnight, covering much of South Wales, South West England, and southern England.
Up to 40mm of rain could fall within two to three hours in some regions. The Met Office stated there is a “good chance” that driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water, or hail, and train services may also face disruptions. Flooding of homes and businesses is possible, along with “some short-term loss of power”.
Thunderstorms are most likely in south-facing coastal areas, accompanied by hail and strong winds during the heaviest rain. Further heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected across central and southern UK on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The weather service has “increasing confidence” that ex-Hurricane Kirk will track south of the UK, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to northern France instead. Although shifts in its path remain possible, the threat of significant impact on the UK has reduced.
This follows a wet start to the month for much of the country, causing isolated flooding in regions such as Norfolk.
Frank Saunders, a chief meteorologist at the Met Office, stated that heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northwards across southern England and Wales this afternoon, clearing overnight. Some places could see 20 to 30mm of rain within two to three hours, with a slight chance of 40mm in a few areas. Thunderstorms are most likely for south-facing coastal districts, with hail and strong gusts of wind possible.
Temperatures will fall from Wednesday in the north, with all areas experiencing below-average temperatures from Thursday. Night frosts are expected in some regions later in the week, with snow possible in higher areas of Scotland.
The Met Office issues yellow warnings for “low-level” weather impacts that could cause disruption but have the potential to become “much more severe”.
