The Duchess of Sussex cut a stylish figure even when she was pregnant with baby Archie

Meghan appeared at the British Fashion Awards in 2018, rocking asymmetrical Givenchy as she presented an award to Clare Waight Keller, the designer who made her wedding dress earlier that year.

It was an elegant, clean cut performance, as always. Still, there was one aspect of the outfit that raised an eyebrow or two.

Because the hands that simultaneously flaunt her marriage with sparkles and a baby bump were not decorated with the bright or neutral colors of nail polish normally expected of women in the British royal family, but a vibrant shade of red-black, possibly Rouge Noir of Chanel.

Not that the Duchess is the only royal to break protocol in this particular way, as these photos show.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, added an unusual splash of color when she attended the Easter Morning Service in Windsor this year.

The mother of three painted her nails dark red in contrast to the neutral or bright shades she typically wears for public appearances.

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 58, has been spotted from time to time in berry colored nail polish, as well as red and pink.

Princess Diana stuck to the neutral rule until her marriage to Charles unraveled.

As a single woman, she returned to brighter shades of nail polish.

Referring to the night Diana wore her black ‘revenge dress’ (Prince Charles’ admission of adultery was broadcast that same night), designer Christina Stambolian wrote: ‘She was clearly angry (…) She wore bright red nail enamel, which we have never had. seen her do before. She said, ‘Let’s be wicked tonight.’

Queen Elizabeth, meanwhile, opted for a light pink ‘Ballet Slippers’ color by Essie.

The shade ended up complementing many of her colorful outfits.

In 1989, Queen Elizabeth’s hairdresser sent Essie a letter requesting a bottle of ballet slippers, calling them ‘the only color Her Majesty would wear’.
