In their first match since Jurgen Klopp announced he will leave at the end of the season, Liverpool defeated Norwich 5-2 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Curtis Jones gave Liverpool the lead before Ben Gibson equalized for Norwich. The hosts then took control of the match, with Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Virgil van Dijk all getting on the scoresheet.

Borja Sainz got a goal back for Norwich but Ryan Gravenberch scored late on as Liverpool reached the fifth round.

Lewis Steele brings you the moments you may have missed during the match at Anfield.

No special farewell for Klopp yet

If you had been living under a rock for about 72 hours before attending this match and missed the shock news of Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure, there was little to indicate that anything had changed at Liverpool.

Of course nothing has changed yet. There was no mention of Klopp’s departure in the matchday programme, there were no special banners – both due to late notice – and apart from a few choruses of ‘I’m so glad Jurgen is a Red’ the atmosphere was flat. There are still plenty of moments to say goodbye, you know.

James McConnell shines on a proud day for Liverpool’s youth academy

Another proud day for the Liverpool academy, with four of the five goals all assisted by graduates: James McConnell, Conor Bradley (two) and Curtis Jones. The highlight was 19-year-old McConnell, the young midfielder making his first senior start for the Reds.

He caught Klopp’s attention during the pre-season tour of Singapore and has been with the first team ever since. Newcastle-born McConnell was plucked from Sunderland’s academy and captained Liverpool’s youth teams.

As a child he was a more attacking midfielder, but first-team coaches have cast him in the sixth role and he shares the nickname ‘Macca’ with fellow midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

No signs of promotion in Norwich

Having been promoted or relegated at the end of seven of the nine seasons between 2013 and 2022, the strings of the Norwich yo-yo seem to be out of whack. This was never a match to judge David Wagner’s side, but they show no signs of promotion.

Long-serving Stuart Webber has recently left and new man Ben Knapper, a former member of Arsenal’s recruitment team, has backed Wagner, who fans are not convinced of. The Canaries have some useful players, but this once well-managed club appears to have no sense of direction.
