A public spat between prominent political activist Morara Kebaso and fiery lawyer Miguna Miguna took a surprising turn this weekend after an apology was issued by Kebaso, following accusations of disrespect.
On Friday, October 11, 2024, Miguna Miguna shared screenshots of a conversation with Morara on X (formerly Twitter), where Morara’s verified account appeared to hurl abuse after a disagreement.
According to Miguna, the conflict stemmed from his rejection of an idea proposed by the activist.
“I have received and responded to Morara’s direct message to me,” Miguna wrote.
“The struggle needs discipline, focus and above all, integrity. Dishonesty, opportunism, disrespect, and abuse each other is counterproductive. The struggle will and must continue with or without him. Be the judge.”
The revelation, accompanied by screenshots of the messages, provoked strong reactions from Miguna’s followers, many of whom expressed anger and criticism towards Morara.
Miguna’s post quickly went viral, fueling the backlash.
Amid the mounting outrage, Morara issued a statement on X on Saturday, October 12, 2024, denying responsibility for the abusive messages.
He explained that his social media accounts had been hacked, potentially due to devices confiscated by Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to Morara, unauthorized activity went unnoticed until he later checked his account settings.
“My social media accounts were hacked but I have regained them. I believe the phones that were taken by DCI may have compromised my accounts,” Morara wrote.
“I was so busy I didn’t notice. When I finally went to my settings to check which devices are logged in, I realized suspicious activity. Some of the tweets that were made are not mine or my views. So please ignore.”
The activist went further, publicly apologizing to Miguna and clarifying that the offensive messages did not reflect his opinions.
“@MigunaMiguna the insult was not from me,” Morara wrote in his apology.
“Two devices were logged in at the same time. Receive my sincere apologies for that. Pole sana.”
Miguna, a well-known figure in Kenyan politics, has long been vocal about the importance of integrity and discipline in political activism.
While the apology was acknowledged, Miguna reiterated his stance, stressing that the struggle for justice must remain focused and free of dishonesty or disrespect.
Muguna-Morara conflict comes shortly after the latter was embroiled in another altercation with fellow activist Kasmuel McOure.
As the dust settles on this controversy, the incident underscores the volatile nature of political discourse on social media platforms, where conflicts can escalate rapidly and public figures must navigate the potential for reputational damage.
