But the couple threw the bright, cartoonish brief out of the window, creating a beige room with heavy wooden furniture.

Judge Shaynna Blaze was shocked as she looked around the space, calling a rope ladder the pair installed, ‘just useless.’

‘The fact you’re not listening to the brief, what are you presenting to us? I mean, it’s not even a kid’s room,’ she said.

Also unimpressed, judge Neale Whittaker chimed in, ‘The brief was to create a kid’s room.

‘If they were thinking they’d take a bit of a punt and show the judges they’re sophisticated and grown up, and we’d walk in and be wowed. FAIL’.

Inspecting a heavy set of drawers, he added sarcastically, ‘I mean, every child’s dream, surely.

‘It’s not even a kids’ room,’ he added.

Addressing the couple, who looked disappointed indeed, host Scott Cam gave them a dressing down.

‘We’ve seen contestants before forget a brief and then do what they want. But this is next level,’ he said of the judges’ comments.

In the end, the married architect and start-up worker, came last in the rankings, scoring a low 14 out of 30.
