To mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Thailand incinerated over 20 tonnes of confiscated narcotics valued at a staggering 6.45 billion baht yesterday, June 26.
The vast quantity of drugs, primarily methamphetamine, was seized from 41,800 cases, underscoring the country’s relentless war on drugs.
Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin stated that this destruction is part of the ministry’s comprehensive strategy, which includes prevention, suppression, and rehabilitation. The Thai government has made the eradication of drug abuse a national priority, recognising its devastating impact on society.
Minister Somsak emphasised the importance of a united front in combating drug-related issues.
“Collaboration among all sectors is crucial to dismantle drug networks and foster a drug-free environment.”
Somsak also reassured that public health officials will continue to provide effective treatment and rehabilitation services for those struggling with addiction, reported The Nation.
This incineration event marks the second large-scale drug destruction in the fiscal year 2024, following an even larger incineration of 340 tonnes in December last year. The burning of these drugs is a powerful statement of Thailand’s commitment to a drug-free society and its ongoing efforts to combat the illicit drug trade.
In related news, Phuket Provincial Police arrested a 28 year old man in Chalong for possession of over 4,800 methamphetamine pills, also known as Yaba, more than 22 grammes of crystal meth and a homemade pen gun.
Led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Phichit Thongto, Chief of the Crime Suppression Division at Phuket Provincial Police, officers apprehended Surawut Ratanaliam at a rented room off Chao Fa East Road in Chalong on June 19.
In other news, a drug bust by the Phuket Provincial Police has led to the arrests of three individuals and the seizure of over 15,000 methamphetamine pills, along with various items under the Narcotics Control Act. The total estimated value of the seized items exceeds 387,000 baht.
The arrests were executed by officers under the leadership of the Chief of the Crime Suppression Division at Phuket Provincial Police, Phichit Thongto.
