A five-year-old girl in Texas accidentally shot herself with a firearm she discovered at home, officials reported. Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 8400 block of Parasol Lane, near Fairbanks North Houston Road, overnight on Saturday. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that the young girl may have shot herself unintentionally.
She was taken to a hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery. Her condition is stable, and she is expected to recover. The girl’s stepfather, 33-year-old Jason Nguyen, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. He was booked into the Harris County Jail.
The sheriff confirmed that other children and adults were present in the home during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Court records reveal that Nguyen has multiple felony convictions and was imprisoned in 2014 for being a felon in possession of a weapon. In August, he was arrested again on similar charges but posted bond and was released when his stepdaughter’s incident occurred.
