Kailyn Lowry recently welcomed her twins, a girl and a boy, and the new mother of seven shared a first photo of them on Instagram.
The Teen Mom 2 alumna, 31, opened up about the twins’ premature birth on the latest episode of her Barely Famous podcast.
The babies, who she shares with boyfriend Elijah Scott, were five weeks premature and spent weeks in the NICU.
“Elijah and I talk about the twins’ journey in the NICU on today’s episode. Months later I still cry when I talk about it,” she captioned the post, which included a short video clip from the episode.
Lowry – who had her tubes tied after the birth of the twins – revealed that the couple wasn’t able to hold their babies until more than 24 hours after birth when they settled into the NICU.

‘They weren’t only there for a few days. We were there for a few weeks and we learned so much about the families that are there, and some of them stay there for months,” Lowry said.
Kailyn also shared some of the challenges her twins faced in the NICU, especially her little girl, who she calls Baby B.
‘I’ve never seen a baby in my life that wouldn’t wake up to eat or show signs of being hungry. She just slept through the feedings,” she explained.
“She never had any feeding cues and when I tried to feed her she wouldn’t take a bottle.”
She continued, “And that was really hard because I look at him and I see that he’s in the NICU for the same reasons, but he’s also taking a bottle, and he has no problem with that. And then she slept all the time,” she said as she cried.
‘I cried a lot. “I probably cried more during the NICU journey than I did during the C-section,” she said.
Her newborn son, who she calls Baby B, was allowed to go home first and Kailyn explained that that made things even more difficult because she and Elijah couldn’t go to the hospital together to see Baby B, you had to be home to take care of . Baby A and the other five children.
One day she collapsed from the stress of it all during a visit to the NICU. A doctor asked her if she should talk to someone, such as a therapist.
“I said I have my own therapist, but I’m away from my child, and my child is away from her twin brother. And I feel like that in itself was enough to make me cry,” she said.

Her son went home before her daughter, an experience she found traumatizing
“For me, when I went, you couldn’t be with me in the NICU,” she told Scott.
‘She was crazy about her twin brother; we loved her. When we got home we still couldn’t process it because there was so much happening here. Lincoln still had his basketball games and practices. Isaac still had his after-school stuff. Lux still had what he was doing,” she continued.
‘I still don’t even know if we’ve processed it. I don’t think I’ve processed it until today. We went to the pediatrician yesterday and I’m still very concerned about so many things,” Lowry added.
Kailyn’s twins join her son Rio, 14 months, who she also shares with Scott, Creed, three and a half, and Lux, six and a half with ex Chris Lopez, 10-year-old son Lincoln with ex Javi Marroquin and 14-year-old son Isaac with ex Jo Rivera.
