Sydney’s One Central Park ‘green’ skyscraper pulled up over defects which could risk ‘death or serious injury’ to pedestrians

A skyscraper that is distinguished by its vegetation has been declared unsafe for this reason.

Sydney’s One Central Park building, which is adorned with vertical gardens, has “serious defects” that pose a “risk of death or serious injury” to pedestrians because its external planters do not meet building standards, according to NSW Fair Trading.

The building in Sydney’s inner suburb of Chippendale is owned by Frasers Property, which received a rectification order against the building from Building Commission NSW director Matt Press on January 16.

Sydney’s One Central Park building is distinguished by its external greenery, but that feature is also the reason for serious safety concerns

This followed an emergency order issued on December 11 after the property was inspected on December 6.

A temporary rope support system has been installed to support the planters.

Frasers Property must submit a structural report and rectify the defects by March 2026.

An inspection revealed that the T-bolts securing the planters were randomly distributed, with some fractures and defects.

The inspector also said the planters did not drain rainwater sufficiently and would fill and overflow.

“This dramatically increases the weight of the planters and the treated water in the planters consequently damages the glass windows and canopies,” Fair Trading said. Daily telegram.

It also posed the risk that an overloaded planter could fall on pedestrians below, with potentially serious consequences.

Construction of the building was completed in 2013.

The building also houses Central Park Mall and the world’s tallest floating garden.

The monument received a five-star green rating, making it the largest multi-residential building at the time to receive the highest score for its environmental friendliness.

Under the amendment order, the developer has been directed to erect a fencing or temporary structure on the northeast and west sides of the building while work is being carried out.

The planters must be redesigned by a ‘registered structural engineer and hydraulic engineer’.

Frasers Property has been contacted for comment.
