But what the singer was too modest to mention that evening was that she has made a miraculous recovery after suffering a complete stroke, which made her speech 'almost unintelligible'.

Susan had to learn to speak clearly again and also had to receive intensive vocal guidance so that she could sing.

Her PA Geraldine said her goodnight as usual at the ex-council house in Blackburn West Lothian, where she has always lived.

But when he returned the next morning, it was clear that the singer, while alone, had been affected.

The source said: 'The PA came to see her that morning, they often go for breakfast together, but as soon as she saw Susan she realized they had to go to hospital straight away.

'She could walk, but had a droopy face and slurred speech. She could talk, but it was hard to understand what she was saying.'

There were fears that the stroke could mean that Boyle, who has sold around 25 million albums in her career, might never sing again.

'All she ever wanted to do was sing and she was convinced at that point her career was over. She was devastated, deeply upset and sick.

“She hired a private speech therapist when the crisis was over and she was out of the hospital.

'Since then she sees him a few times a week, does homework in between and also sees her regular singing coach.

'She has worked very hard to get to the point where she could perform (at BGT), although we are not quite back to where we were before the stroke.'
