Steve Thompson has resigned as caretaker manager of Oldham Athletic after his position became untenable.
The 58-year-old spent just three and a half weeks in charge of the club, assisted by Neil Redfearn, and left the Latics following a meeting with the club’s hierarchy on Wednesday.
Thompson took over from David Unsworth last month and his six-match tenure ended with three wins and three draws.
That run put Oldham within striking distance of the National League playoff places, but the former Preston number 2 handed in his resignation after discussions over the club’s future.
“We would like to express our thanks to Steve and Neil for their work in taking charge of the first team over the last few weeks,” read a statement from Oldham.
