Steve Cohen will answer for the Mets’ spiral.
The Mets, the most expensive team in MLB’s history, enter play Tuesday a season-worst eight games under .500.
The disappointments are significant — beginning with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, two future Hall of Famers who have been pedestrian — and numerous — from underperforming offensive stars (Francisco Lindor) to underwhelming rotation depth (Tylor Megill and David Peterson) to a below-average bullpen that has been particularly damaging recently.
Will the Mets sell at the deadline? Will manager Buck Showalter last the entire season? Are shakeups coming?
Mets fans will learn more Wednesday.
“I will be doing a press conference (Wednesday) before the game,” Cohen wrote on Twitter. “You will get it from me straight.”
Thus far, the third season of Cohen’s reign has been a bust, and there is speculation he cannot be happy with his return on investment.
But Cohen has said he is not prone to kneejerk moves.
“When things get really bad, I’m not going to blow up,” Cohen told The Post’s Joel Sherman earlier this month. “I don’t think that’s the proper response.
“I don’t think it solves anything, other than it gives people a one-day story. But it doesn’t really solve anything. There’s plenty of blame to go around from a performance point of view. So blowing up, I’m not sure it solves anything. It would demonstrate, ‘Oh, he really cares. He’s one of us.’ But the reality is it’s not going to solve our problems. And I think in some ways it can be demotivating.”
