StanChart Nairobi Marathon: Gladys Chemutai wins 42km women’s race

Gladys Chemutai has secured victory in the 42km women’s race at the StanChart Nairobi Marathon.

Chemutai crossed the finish line in a stunning 2:31:52.

She finished ahead of Caroline Koech and and Joy Kemuma who clocked 2:35:00 and 2:36:06 respectively. She will walk away with a cash prize of Ksh2 million for claiming the top position.

Chemutai on her win

Speaking at Uhuru Gardens on Sunday, October 27, 2024, just after finishing the race, Chemutai thanked God for the victory, noting that the race was not easy.

She said she did not expect to win the race, noting that the 2024 Stanchart Nairobi Marathon was her third edition.

5th position in last race

Chemutai also revealed that she had finished in the fifth position during her second edition last year, thanking her coach and family for the support that has enabled her to reign supreme in this year’s edition.

Kwanza kabisa ningependa kushukuru Mwenyezi Mungu kwa ajili ya ulinzi wake ambao amenilinda tangu nilipoanza race. It was not easy but Mungu amenisaidia. Sikuwa natarajia kukuwa nambari ya kwanza sababu this is my third edition in Standard Chartered.

“Last year I was in position five but I thank God because he has given me strength na nimemaliza. Ya pili ningependa kushukuru my coach and my friend Irene because she is the one that ananipea motisha, tunatrain na yeye. Ya tatau ningependa kushukuru my family because of their support,” she stated.

Hard training

Chemutai further revealed that she has been training in Iten. According to her, training hard has helped her to win easily.

Mazoezi nafanyia Iten. Nilienda nikajikakamua hadi nikakimbia Riyadh Marathon, I was again position five lakini haikuwa rahisi, na nikakuja nikaenda tena Rwanda lakini sikumanage kumaliza because I had an injury but I thank God,” she told the media.

Caroline Olbara claimed victory in the women’s 21km race after running a smart race to dominate the field.

Olbara clocked 1:11:06 ahead of Gladys Koech and Esther Chemutai who timed 1:12:10 and 1:12:12.
