Smartphones now vital in hurricane survival

Millions of Americans are experiencing the severe impact of this hurricane season’s devastating storms. Smartphones are becoming crucial tools for survival. Even during extended service outages, iPhone models 14, 15, and 16 can reach 911 via satellite without any setup, provided users have a clear sky view.

The major iOS 18 update, released in September, allows many iPhones to send messages through satellite services when cellular or wifi signals are unavailable. Devices from iPhone 14 onwards with the new iOS can configure messaging settings to use a satellite connection. During Hurricane Helene, some users reported that this feature was life-saving.

To use “Messages via Satellite,” users must enable iMessage and follow instructions in the messages section of settings. The phone will indicate the best direction to point for optimal satellite reception. This feature requires being outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon.

Emergency contacts in a pre-set family sharing group can send SMS texts via satellite in the U.S. and Canada with carriers like AT&T and Verizon, even without the user initiating contact. This capability extends to roadside assistance and emergency services communication. Messages may take longer to send under these conditions, and locations can also be shared.

Google Pixel models, including Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold, offer similar emergency satellite features in the continental U.S. When Google messaging is the primary app, and no service is available, a call to 911 will prompt a “satellite SOS” option, an emergency questionnaire, and a notification to emergency contacts. Emergency services will then start a text conversation.

Google advises that “Connection and response times vary based on location, site conditions, and other factors.”
