Selena Gomez has revealed more about her mental health issues and the poignant reason she avoids sleeping in her bedroom. On World Mental Health Day, October 10, the singer and actress joined her mother, Mandy Teefey, and social worker Minaa B for a keynote speech at Wondermind’s Mental Fitness Summit.

During her address, Gomez discussed her battles with psychosis, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. She explained that after years of isolation, she now depends on a small, supportive community.

“I don’t have many people in my life, but I know who my inner circle is,” Gomez shared. “I need to talk things out. I have a therapist, but it’s also great to have people who just listen. There’s freedom in letting go of what keeps you stuck.”

In a panel discussion on coping with overwhelming feelings and reluctance to get out of bed, Gomez revealed why she avoids sleeping in her bedroom. “I am a very anxious person,” she said. “It’s like doomsday, but having a positive conversation with yourself, even if it sounds odd, is impactful. Before stepping out of the car into a noisy environment, I breathe and remind myself, ‘All of this is a gift.’ Making someone smile, no matter how I feel, always makes my day.”

Gomez discussed her documentary, *My Mind and Me*, which delves into her mental health struggles. She explained, “I spent so much time in my bedroom during a dark period that I can’t sleep there anymore.”

She added, “Anxiety can be so debilitating. I didn’t want to leave my bed for years because I wasn’t doing the work. You have to believe in yourself to find enlightenment.”

The star also emphasised the importance of taking breaks from social media for her well-being. She mentioned that she’s learned to stop defending herself, stating, “I shouldn’t be apologetic for being honest or saying I’m not okay.”

Gomez reflected on her mother’s advice about dealing with constant noise, saying, “I need to remind myself that I’m a good person, I work hard, and I appreciate the little things in life. It hurts when people are inhumane with their words, especially when they wouldn’t say those things in person.”
