“After undergoing facial reconstructive surgery, Edward becomes fixated on an actor in a stage production based on his past life,” reads a logline for the film from writer-director Aaron Schimberg.

Stan appeared on a panel alongside Schimberg, Reinsve and Pearson for a question-and-answer session about the film at the Berlin Film Festival on February 16.

The actor, who has starred in multiple films in 2023 – including Dumb Money, Sharper and Ghosted – was involved in a spirited argument with a reporter over their choice of words regarding their character’s appearance (which required the use of facial prosthetics).

Stan was asked how he thought his character would fare “after transforming from this so-called beast, as they call him, to this perfect man?” according to Entertainment weekly.

Stan responded, “I just have to tell you about the word choice, because I think part of the reason the movie is important is that often we don’t…maybe even have the right vocabulary.”

He continued, “I think it’s a little more complicated than that – and obviously there are language barriers and so on – but you know, ‘beast’ isn’t the word.”

Stan said the film aims to convey a message of openness in its story.

“I feel like… that’s one of the things the movie says is that we have preconceived notions, and we’re not really trained in how to really understand this experience in particular,” he said.

He continued, “The things you say about him in the beginning, that’s your interpretation. Everyone may have a different interpretation of what they are going through. It may not be; Maybe it was just for you. I can’t really talk about that.

Stan said the film provokes introspection, which is a good thing.

“I think one of the things I like about the film is that it gives you a way to look at it, and hopefully, if you can have that same objective point of view while experiencing the film, maybe you can do that too. kind of distinguishing between the initial instincts that you have, and maybe they’re not always the right ones,” he said.

Stan further spoke at the Sundance Film Festival in January about playing the role, which required facial prosthetics, and the reactions he received from others.

“It’s really between two extremes, which is either nothing is done about it or there’s overcompensation,” Stan said. “The only people who were really the most honest were children.”

Stan said that during a conversation he witnessed a mother and her young daughter discussing his appearance while putting on the facial prosthetics.

“Her mother was just being a parent and trying to do the right thing, but by doing the right thing, she actually prevented the little girl from just having an experience,” Stan said.

He said the child was “just curious, and she was brave and courageous, and those are kids, right? It’s like they just want to know. They have no judgment. It was really a learning lesson for me.’

Stan still has an important role to play, as he portrays a young Donald J. Trump in The Apprentice, a film by director Ali Abbasi about Trump in the 1970s and 1980s.

Stan is joined in the cast by Succession star Jeremy Strong, who plays Trump’s late lawyer and mentor Roy Cohn; and Oscar-nominated actress Maria Bakalova, who will play Trump’s late ex-wife Ivana Trump.

Stan, who has also appeared in multiple MCU films playing Bucky ‘Winter Soldier’ Barnes, is the latest in a line of performers who have played Trump.

Few have been for dramatic productions, the most recent being Irish actor Brendan Gleeson in the 2020 Showtime miniseries The Comey Rule.

Trump has been spoofed for decades on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, with actors like Alec Baldwin, Darrell Hammond, Jason Sudeikis, Taran Killam and the late Phil Hartman playing him at various points.

Stan has received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in the past after playing the role of Tommy Lee on Hulu’s Pam & Tommy.

Stan was rumored to star Ric Flair in a movie after meeting the professional wrestling icon in New York City in May 2023. (Aaron Dean Eisenberg played Flair in A24’s The Iron Claw.)
