Savara narrates his encounter with American comedian Dave Chappelle

Kenyan musician Savara said he was looking forward to watching American stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle in Kenya.

Being a first appearance in Kenya, Savara joined hundreds of Kenyans in attending Chappelle’s show.

As seen on his X account (formerly Twitter), Savara said watching Chappelle perform was so inspiring to him.

Apparently, Savara believes Chapelle behaves just as we do. He filled his post with praises hinting at Chappelle’s good personality.

“Watching @DaveChappelle live last night was so inspiring. Nikamgotea. Manze ako tu kama sisi. He also has a very good personality. Blessed,” Savara said.

Chappelle in Kenya

Comedian Legend Dave Chappelle was in Kenya for a one-of-a-kind show which went down at the Louis Leaky Auditorium on May 29, 2024.

The show remained under wraps with little to no accessibility to Dave Chappelle himself except for the concertgoers. Characteristically, the comedian did not mention the event on any of his social media platforms even though it was announced that he was already in Kenya.

Neither Chappelle nor the event organisers shared photos and videos documenting his arrival.

The sudden show, which was announced less than 48 hours before D-Day, caught many Kenyans by surprise with many expressing regret at not being able to attend the comedic icon’s maiden performance due to the abrupt ticketing.

According to Punchline Comedy Club, who were the official promoters of the rare event, the show kicked off at 8.00 pm. Tickets were going for Ksh7,000 and were sold out in just two hours.

Strict regulations

Further, the concert had strict regulations, for instance, the concert-goers had to surrender their mobile phones, recording devices and smartwatches to the event’s management as no form of recording was allowed in the auditorium.

“No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show. Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show,” Punchline Comedy Club announced on Instagram.

In 2003, the comedian launched Chappelle’s Show, a wildly popular television show that ended on the eve of the third season. Chappelle continued touring as a stand-up comic in 2013 and went on to deliver several Netflix specials.
