Ronald Kimeli Kurgat shines in men’s marathon at Stanchart Nairobi race

The Stanchart Nairobi Marathon drew an impressive roster of runners on Sunday, October 27, 2024, with Ronald Kimeli Kurgat claiming victory in the men’s 42-kilometre event, clocking in at 2 hours, 13 minutes, and 5 seconds.

In a close race, Dominick Kipkirui followed just eight seconds behind, and Peter Kwemoi Ndorobo finished a second later, completing the top three.

Reflecting on his performance, Kurgat expressed gratitude and satisfaction after the race.

“It was not easy,” he said.

“We tried our best until the last kilometre, and I decided to give my all. My colleague gave me the motivation to keep going, and I’m grateful to God for the strength.”

Mens’ 21km race

In the men’s 21-kilometer event, Vincent Mutai demonstrated both resilience and athleticism, overcoming physical challenges to lead the field.

Mutai crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 27 seconds.

Though he struggled midway, feeling nauseous twice, Mutai’s pace control secured him the win, edging out Keyborn Obato and Silas Chepkwony, who finished in 1:03:34 and 1:03:51, respectively.

Reflecting on the result, Mutai expressed satisfaction, citing strong preparation and ideal weather.

“I knew there was something good for me today,” he commented, hinting at future ambitions in cross-country racing.

Men’s wheelchair race

In the men’s wheelchair division, John Wambua dominated, completing the race in 1:29:01.

Second place went to Milton Ilahuya, finishing at 1:34:56, while Caleb Henry took third, clocking 1:37:59.

Wambua’s dedication to rigorous training, he noted, was key to his win.

“This is proof that I’m ready for an international marathon, and I’m prepared for that opportunity,” he added.

The Stanchart Nairobi Marathon not only celebrated the determination of these runners but also highlighted a growing field of emerging talent ready to represent Kenya on global stages.
