Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua remains at The Karen Hospital, where he was admitted after experiencing chest pains during his impeachment trial. Gachagua, who was dismissed from office despite his hospitalization, is being closely monitored by doctors.

On Thursday, October 17, Gachagua was rushed to the hospital after he complained of severe chest pains while attending his impeachment trial. His cardiologist, Dr. Dan Gikonyo, explained that Gachagua was showing signs of takotsubo syndrome, a condition often brought on by stress.

Fortunately, Gachagua’s non-smoking history made managing the condition easier, but he required a stay of 48 to 72 hours under close observation.

Threee days later, Gachagua remains in the hospital. Limited access to his room has been enforced, and even his visitors, including Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi, have had only brief moments with him. However, reports confirm that his condition is stable, though he still needs significant rest.

Rigathi Gachagua Impeached in Absentia

Gachagua’s impeachment trial proceeded in his absence.

Senators refused to delay the trial despite his lawyer’s request, citing his health issues. The trial concluded with an overwhelming vote to remove him from office.

Five charges were upheld against him, including inciting ethnic divisions and violating his oath of office. While Gachagua was cleared of six other charges, the Senate’s decision led to his immediate removal as deputy president.

In a dramatic turn, President William Ruto quickly nominated Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki to replace Gachagua.

Parliament unanimously approved Kindiki, though the Nairobi High Court later suspended the swearing-in until a case challenging Gachagua’s impeachment is heard on October 24.

With his removal from office after only two years, Gachagua not only loses his role but also a lavish retirement benefits.

His once-large security detail has been drastically reduced, and he is expected to vacate his official residence in Karen.

But Gachagua remains committed to fighting the Senate’s decision.

He has labeled the impeachment a “political lynching” and plans to challenge the ruling in court.
