Pattaya police apprehended a ride-sharing driver in the early hours of yesterday, following an incident of the driver discharging a firearm into the sea, which provoked fear among tourists near Jomtien Beach.
The incident took a turn at around 2.36am, near Soi 16, where the sounds of gunshots rippled through the calm sea air.
At that moment, Bang Lamung District Secretary, Phonchai Sang-iad, was in the vicinity, taking in the atmosphere of the beach with some companions. Not in his official attire but in plain clothes, Phonchai was there to observe the situation following recent noise and crime complaints received by the Bang Lamung office. The sounds of gunfire, unexpected and alarming, caught their attention.
Acting promptly, Phonchai, along with other officials, rushed to the origin of the disturbance. There, they were confronted by Thotchaphon Aunwong, a 29 year old man who earns a living driving for a ride-sharing app. Upon searching him, the officials discovered an HS-9 pistol, a holster, and 21 rounds of ammunition, all in his possession.
Thotchaphon did not deny the accusations levelled against him. He admitted to owning the firearm and discharging it into the sea. He claimed he fired the gun for fun and to de-stress. He also revealed that he possessed other firearms at his residence but had only brought one to the beach that night.
The Pattaya police took Thotchaphon into custody for a thorough investigation. He is now likely to face several charges related to his irresponsible handling of firearms, reported Pattaya News.
Phonchai and his fellow officials noted that Thotchaphon’s actions had caused significant distress among the tourists who were present at the beach.
In related news, Bangkok police arrested a 60 year old man following reports of him brandishing a firearm while intoxicated at a rental room.
The arrest was a coordinated effort by senior law enforcement officers, including Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, the Metropolitan Police Chief, and his deputies, along with investigative officers from the fourth subdivision.
