An Australian gambler is hoping European superstar Vauban will win the $8 million Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, with a return of nearly $1 million.

An unnamed Ladbrokes customer placed a $1,000 bet on a five-leg multi on September 23 and has won a trump on the first four legs.

The punter started betting on Kiwi sprint queen Imperatriz to win the Moir Stakes on September 29 (for $2).

The next day they had kept the multi alive by picking Collingwood to win the AFL premiership (for $1.70), before Ace Impact came through with the goods in France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (for $ 4.33).

The bettor had then chosen Without A Fight to win the $5 million Caulfield Cup (for $8), putting West Wind Blows into second place in an enthralling finish.

The final leg of the multi sees Vauban win Australia’s most famous horse race on Tuesday (for $7).

If successful, the gambler’s return will be $989,120.

Vauban is the expert tip to win the Melbourne Cup – and another intrepid gambler tried to put $400,000 on the nose at odds of $5 – but found no bookmakers willing to take the bet.

The six-year-old gelding, trained by Willie Mullins, has secured a $4.60 favor ahead of the nation’s stoppage race.

Another racing fan will go wild as Vauban salutes over 3,200 meters after a $320,000 bet (with odds of $4.80 and $4) was taken.

Prominent owner Nick Williams – who has Serpentine and Cleveland in this year’s race – believes it will take some time for the pre-race favorite.

“I think it’s as good as I’ve seen in the Melbourne Cup, as far as I can remember,” he said.

‘He’s a tough, older horse. Well seasoned and beautifully conditioned.’

Mullins is confident he will win his first Melbourne Cup, with his star being ridden by Ryan Moore.

“He is the best chance we have ever had and will ever have,” he said of Vauban.

‘Everything went well…the quarantine, even the trekking.

“We just have to break (jump) now and get into a position, but I’ll leave that up to the jockeys. They know the track and the opposition better than I do.’
