Promising Aussie opening batsman Will Pucovski won’t be considered for Test selection in the short term because of ongoing concussion fears

  • Pucovski will not be eligible for selection in the short term
  • The prodigy has suffered a series of worrying concussions
  • Selectors want to see more consistency from Pucovski

Australia’s chairman of selectors has revealed that prodigy Will Pucovski will not be considered for selection anytime soon as he continues his comeback from concussion and mental health issues.

Widely touted as one of the country’s top emerging talents, Pucovski has played just one Test for Australia, against India in January 2021.

Along with Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris, the right-hander is one of the contenders to replace David Warner once he retires.

However, the youngster has suffered eleven concussions during his career and has had to take some time away from the sport to recover.

George Bailey, the Australian chairman of selectors, says he is happy to have Pucovski playing cricket again but has not yet been in contact with him.

“No, there has been no communication,” he said.

“(I’m) just really happy to see him playing Shield cricket again and hopefully it stays that way.”

Bailey says he wants to see “continuity” in Pucovski’s game now that he’s playing regularly again.

“I saw Will’s comments at the last Shield game and based on that I think it’s five in a row he’s played now,” he said.

“Just that continuity of his cricket will do him good.”

Pucovski, who recently scored 65 in the second innings against South Australia, admitted he would like to play in the national team again one day.
