Prince William was allegedly so anxious before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview that he couldn’t eat.
The Prince of Wales, 41, was unable to eat for a week before his estranged brother, 38, and sister-in-law’s bombshell chat dropped that March, according to The Mirror.
Daily Mail editor Charlotte Griffiths had appeared on Dan Wootton’s GB News show recently and looked back on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s talk with Winfrey, 69.
“What I find quite surprising, and I’ve heard this for a long time now from many different sources, is that in the lead up to that Oprah interview, William was quite literally sick with worry,” Griffiths said, via the Mirror.
The journalist went on: “He was not eating, and he became, not reclusive, but he definitely was hiding away. He went to a royal residence for a period of time to cut himself off from the world. He was just in bits, basically.”
Griffiths then explained that William’s wife Kate Middleton was supportive of him when he wanted to mask his face from the public for a short time.
She continued: “What Kate was doing was standing by her man. Kate was like: ‘I’ve got to stick up for this guy and protect him. He’s being destroyed by this.’”
“That probably made her quite steely even though she has this reputation for being shy. But when it comes to protecting her husband, she’s going to step in and protect him,” she said.
In the interview with the media titan, Harry and Markle, 41, made many claims about the royal family, including discussions over how dark their son Archie’s skin would be, how Middleton made the former actress cry and more.
Just a day after the special aired, William, refuted reports that The Firm was a racist institution.
“We are very much not a racist family,” the father of three told reporters at the time when he was asked about the interview.
After the chat went down, Buckingham Palace released a statement about the Sussexes’ allegations on behalf of Queen Elizabeth.
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the note read.
“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members,” they added.
Following the Oprah chat, the Invictus Games founder and the “Suits” alum dropped a medley of jaw-dropping projects where they described the pain they felt while being a part of the royal family.
Harry published his 410-page memoir titled “Spare” earlier this year and the couple premiered their Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan” in December 2022.
