Michelle, who has been sober for five years, shares two sons Harry, four, and Nicholas Peter, two, with her husband Jeff Nimmo.

In 2016, Michelle admitted that during her time on Pop Idol she had difficulty with people scrutinizing her appearance.

Speaking about Lorraine, she said: ‘It was difficult, everyone wants to look as good as possible. I was only 24, I’d never been to London, it was always made so important, I’ve been up and down, it will always be a part of me.

“I think it will always be a part of me, even if I lost all the weight and became a real skinny minny, it would still be there somehow.”

Michelle also said that before her wedding she wanted to “pull her jaw up” to lose weight.

Last year, Michelle opened up about her decision to quit alcohol, admitting she ‘had no stop button’ when she drank.

She appeared on Loose Women in December 2023, 20 years after winning the second series of Pop Idol.

Discussing her win, she said: “I can’t believe it’s been so long! I was 23 at the time and I don’t think I could experience that now with social media. I don’t think I would have been mentally strong enough.’

Michelle then became emotional as she reflected on her experiences during the competition, as they were tainted by judgments about her appearance.

She broke down in tears as she described how she was “so ashamed” of the trolling she received and the stories written about her on the show.

Michelle said: ‘It was really difficult. I don’t know why I’m getting emotional now, it was 20 years ago.”

“One of the first articles that came out said at the top, ‘Can Michelle sing? Yes. Will she become a pop star? But come on guys, you wouldn’t do that, would you?’ And off it went.’

She continued: “Some of the comments made me feel so ashamed, like I had let everyone down. I couldn’t understand why people voted for me because of the comments.

“I would say no now if my daughter asked to go to a show like that right now because of social media.”

Michelle then discussed her decision to quit drinking after choosing to get sober four years ago.

She confessed that she had an unhealthy relationship with booze due to the negative attention she received and that she feels ‘more empowered’ since quitting the drink.

She said: ‘I like alcohol. Alcohol was my best friend for a long time.

“When I was in my late 30s and early 40s, I had a bit of a falling out with alcohol and I thought it was time to cut it out of my life.

‘I didn’t have a stop button, I used to drink a few glasses of red and say, “Where are the Jack Daniels?” ‘And I thought I wish I could be a social drinker, but I never was, so I just cut it out of my life.

‘And now it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. That made me feel stronger.’
