Police fatally shoot man wielding firearm in Athens, Georgia

Police fatally shot a man in Georgia on Sunday after he was seen wielding a firearm near a gas station in Athens, officials reported.

Athens-Clarke County Police received a report around 1:20 a.m. on Sunday about an individual brandishing a “machine gun” near the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Upon arrival, officers spotted the suspect, 26-year-old Marquavious Sims, at a Verizon store. He then crossed the road to the QuickTrip gas station parking lot.

Officers chased Sims, instructing him to drop the weapon. During the brief pursuit, Sims fired at the officers. Two officers returned fire, hitting Sims multiple times.

Officers provided emergency medical assistance until emergency medical technicians arrived.

Sims was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

No officers sustained injuries during the incident.

Athens-Clarke County Police requested the GBI to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

The two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the GBI’s investigation.

Sims’ body will undergo an autopsy at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, Georgia.

Upon completion, the investigation will be reviewed by the Clarke County District Attorney’s Office.
