Philippine music industry mourns loss of ‘Bob Marley’ Kokoi Baldo

Renowned Filipino singer Kokoi Baldo, tragically lost his life in an accident that has left the Philippine music industry in a state of deep sorrow. Baldo, also known as Juan Manuel Ubaldo, was a popular reggae musician and a finalist on the second season of The Voice. His demise occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, December 8, 2023, in Bacolod City. The 44-year-old artist was often referred to as the “Bob Marley of the Philippines”, a testament to his unique musical style and talent.

The fatal accident took place on the Circumferential Road in Barangay Mandalagan when Ubaldo was trying to overtake another vehicle. He lost control of his motorbike, resulting in a collision with a 10-wheeler truck transporting sugarcane. Reports suggest that the impact was so severe that it led to his head being severed from his body.

The unfortunate event occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, in Barangay Mandalagan, Bacolod City, leading to the untimely demise of the beloved singer. The driver of the truck, Bunny Flor, has been identified and is currently in custody. A comprehensive investigation has been initiated at Bacolod City’s Police Station 3 to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident and identify potential legal liabilities.

Born on September 22, 1989, in Negros Oriental, Philippines, Kokoi Baldo, born Rodel Baldo, was a musical prodigy who charmed audiences globally with his exceptional talent and striking stage presence. His journey to stardom began when he participated in the Filipino adaptation of the talent show “The Voice”. Although he did not win, Baldo’s unique reggae-style performance left a lasting mark on the audience and catapulted him to fame.
