The high-profile match fell well short of the pre-match hype as Pep Guardiola’s men were held by former City coach Mikel Arteta and his well-drilled Arsenal side in a cagey 0-0 draw – the first time in 76 Premier League matches Last season’s treble winners are locked in a goalless stalemate.

Whether this proves to be a significant point or a missed opportunity for both sides remains to be seen, with Liverpool now top with 67 points, ahead of Arsenal on 65 and City on 64.

Gabriel Jesus had the best chances for Arsenal in a dull first half that was largely dominated by the home side without creating any chances.

Referee Anthony Taylor showed few cards during a match that limped to a draw, ending the Gunners’ eight-match losing streak in all competitions at the Etihad.
