Oscar Sudi Issues Strong Warning to Mandago After Loss of Ksh 10M in Scholarship Controversy

Kapsaret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi, has entered the ongoing discussion surrounding the Finland Scholarship controversy, urging Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago to compensate the families affected by the failed initiative. During the inauguration of CDF classrooms in his constituency, Sudi made it clear that he won’t stand up for his compatriot in the Kenya Kwanza alliance. He candidly disclosed that he himself had suffered losses of nearly Ksh 10 million in donations for students aiming to pursue studies in Finland.

Sudi expressed his distress at the hardship numerous parents were facing, especially given their existing financial struggles. He remarked, “Mandago should even consider selling his property. They shouldn’t deceive us any longer; they must return the people’s money. These individuals involved aren’t lacking in resources.”

He continued, “I also played a role in contributing Ksh 10 million to the Finland Scholarship initiative. Irrespective of the ongoing legal proceedings, the funds need to be reimbursed.”

Sudi emphasized that justice could only be achieved if the money was returned, irrespective of the ongoing court case where Mandago and three others were charged with conspiring to commit a crime.

According to Sudi, the misappropriation of funds was a calculated move executed months prior to the election period.

“People have gone to the extent of selling their land or taking out loans. Yet, some individuals misused the money and expect us to stand by them. That’s not tenable. The only way to fill a hole is by using soil to do so. If you have a debt, it’s your responsibility to repay it,” the MP asserted.

In the meantime, Mandago, a former governor, maintains his innocence in the matter. He has also indicated his willingness to collaborate with the affected families to facilitate their refunds.

“As a law-abiding citizen, I want to reiterate my readiness to present myself at any police station when summoned. I’ve engaged with the leadership of the parents seeking refunds and we’ve agreed on the path forward, as outlined in their recent statement,” the Senator conveyed on August 16.

Mandago was apprehended on August 16 and arraigned in Nakuru Law Courts the following day on charges of misappropriating funds from the over Ksh 1 billion scholarship fund. He was subsequently released on a cash bail of Ksh 500,000 and is expected to enter a plea once the fourth accused, reportedly in Canada, returns to the country.

Both President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga condemned Mandago’s actions. President Ruto cautioned that any individuals found guilty of embezzling nearly Ksh 1 billion from the fund would bear the consequences themselves.
