Two stores in Porto have closed their doors after being breached by the Australian Taxation Office.

The restaurants, in Sydney’s Newtown and Darling Harbour, are run by franchises that went into administration on Friday after the ATO demanded payment of back taxes they owed.

Jevnt Pty Ltd and Pymz Pty Ltd – which run the Newtown and Darling Harbor sites – owe a combined debt of between $400,000 and $500,000.

Their director Ming Zhong had been fined by the ATO, ordering him to pay the debt within 21 days or face bankruptcy. news.com.au reported.

The chicken shop in Newtown did not open on Friday. The Darling Harbor restaurant has been closed since the Harborside Shopping Center closed for redevelopment in January 2023.

It is believed there are around 20 staff working at the Newtown store.

There are more than 190 Porto restaurants across Australia.

The chain specializes in Portuguese-style chicken and was founded in 1986 by Portuguese-Australian António Cerqueira in Bondi.
