Olympic hero Peter Bol opens up on doping controversy on SAS Australia revealing the brutal mental toll of the saga: ‘I felt betrayed’

Australian Olympian Peter Bol was officially cleared to take performance-enhancing drugs earlier this year, but admits the testing fiasco has had disastrous consequences for him and those close to him.

In January, the 28-year-old was shocked to learn he had tested positive for EPO and was suspended from athletics, throwing his life into chaos.

Bol proclaimed his innocence and a subsequent independent analysis of the athlete’s B sample returned an atypical result, or false positive.

The Commonwealth Games silver medalist was later officially cleared after Sport Integrity Australia said he would not progress his anti-doping rule violation and closed its investigation.

On an episode of SAS Australia on Monday night, Bol revealed how he reacted when he learned of the bizarre test result.

The athletics star was officially exonerated from the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

“I was devastated, I never considered cheating,” he said.

“It became public and it got crazy. The media came out loud. It was difficult, especially having media waiting outside my parents’ house.

“I just felt like we were attacked and robbed. But what mattered most were the people who doubted you.

“So when the (negative) results came out. I didn’t even know how to react. I wasn’t excited. I wasn’t going to celebrate my own innocence, so I was even more angry and disappointed by the way I had been treated.

“I felt betrayed but figured I can’t focus on that, so I might as well go and break a few more records.”

Bol said the testing fiasco also impacted the lives of those close to him.

“It’s the worst thing an athlete can go through,” Bol said.

“My parents had to endure my allegations as much as I did and they had nothing to do with it.”

Bol said he didn’t know how to react when he heard the shocking news.

Bol said he felt betrayed and never considered cheating.

The World Anti-Doping Agency acknowledged Sport Integrity Australia’s announcement clearing Bol and pledged to “undertake a review of current EPO processes” following Bol’s nightmare.

“While we have no reason to question the validity of the analytical method used for recombinant EPO, WADA will evaluate the current review process in light of the particularities of this case,” a statement from the WADA said. ‘AMA.

Bol, who finished fourth in the 800m final at the Tokyo Olympics, began running again ahead of the Paris Olympics.
