Oliver Stone reveals top film picks, highlights ‘Megalopolis’

Celebrated director Oliver Stone has shared his top movie picks of recent times. Known for directing films like “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July,” Stone often stirs conversation with his work. On his Facebook page, he listed some of his favourite films, spanning from the 1980s to the present.

Leading his list is “Megalopolis,” set in a futuristic New York, renamed New Rome. The film follows a visionary architect’s conflict with a mayor aiming to transform the city into a high-tech ‘Megalopolis.’ Stone describes the film’s visuals as stunning and admires its lead, played by Adam Driver. Although he admits not fully grasping the narrative, Stone appreciates its exploration of future societal possibilities.

“Parthenope,” inspired by Greek mythology, tells the tale of a siren seeking happiness in 1950s Naples. Stone finds the film’s ending ‘mind-blowing’ and expresses a desire to watch it repeatedly. He likens its style to “Poor Things,” a film he also admires.

Stone also highlights “The Apprentice,” a biopic about Donald Trump. It delves into Trump’s real estate career and his ties with attorney Roy Cohn. Stone praises the film’s depiction of moral decay, urging viewers to see it as a character study rather than a political piece.

Another favourite of Stone’s is “Youth,” which follows a retired composer and his friend as they develop a final screenplay for the Queen. Stone lauds the performances of Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, and Rachel Weisz, noting the film’s exquisite dialogue and music. He regards director Paolo Sorrentino as a top figure in European cinema.

Finally, Stone commends “Excalibur,” a fantasy film based on the legend of Camelot. He appreciates its magical realism and Boorman’s mystical storytelling, emphasising the timeless nature of the story’s message of peace.
