A man died Monday night after being pushed onto subway tracks in what police said was an unprovoked attack at a station in Harlem.

A 45-year-old man was taken into custody after allegedly pushing another man onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train at the 125th Street station at Lexington Avenue in East Harlem.

The suspect was reportedly described as an emotionally disturbed person.

The fatal incident took place on Monday around 6.45 pm. According to a police spokeswoman, the victim was pushed onto the city platform in front of a train that could not stop.

Neither the victim nor the attacker have been identified.

Number 5 trains in both directions were severely delayed after the attack, according to the MTA. Although normal service to the station had resumed at 9 p.m.

A large number of officers remain on site.

Footage from the scene posted to the Citizen App earlier in the evening showed a number of shocked New Yorkers standing on the platform as word spread of a man under the tracks.

The horrific episode occurred just weeks after New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced she would deploy National Guard troops and state police officers to the New York subway system, where crime and violent incidents have increased in recent years.

Just days after Hochul’s announcement, a fight on the A train ended in a shooting, leaving many New Yorkers with the impression that the vast transportation system is virtually impossible for police.
