Netanyahu interrupted by victims’ families at memorial for Hamas attacks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced interruptions from victims’ families during a memorial event for the October 7 Hamas attacks. Netanyahu remained still at the lectern in Jerusalem while audience members shouted for over a minute. One person cried out, “My father was killed,” expressing sorrow and demanding stronger action from Netanyahu’s government to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Many hold Netanyahu accountable for the failures that led to the Hamas attack and for not yet securing the return of the hostages from Gaza. Currently, Hamas holds 97 hostages in Gaza, with 34 reported as deceased.

Israeli intelligence chief David Barnea plans to visit Doha for negotiations on a hostage release deal. The recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, seen as a barrier to negotiations, may facilitate these talks. Earlier, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant admitted that military efforts alone might not suffice to bring the hostages home. Gallant mentioned that some “painful concessions” might be necessary to fulfil Israel’s commitment to the hostages’ return. Families of the hostages and several Western leaders have urged Israel to pursue a truce and secure a release deal.

Netanyahu also stated on Sunday that Israel’s airstrikes significantly impaired Iran’s defence and missile production capabilities. “The air force attacked throughout Iran. We hit hard Iran’s defence capabilities and its ability to produce missiles aimed at us,” Netanyahu claimed, describing the attack as “precise and powerful” and saying it met all its objectives.
