‘Nailed the language after a week!’: Fans poke fun at Bayern Munich newcomer Eric Dier for ‘going full Steve McClaren’ claiming he’s ‘got a German accent’ as the defender speaks after his Bundesliga debut

Fans joked that Eric Dier has ‘completely become Steve McClaren’ and claimed he ‘has a German accent’, as the defender spoke in a post-match interview after his side’s 1-0 win against Union Berlin.

Dier, who signed a loan deal to join the Bundesliga just under two weeks ago, came off the bench at half-time to make his first appearance for his new club at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

It was a successful debut for the England international, with Raphael Guerreiro scoring within minutes of Dier arriving on the pitch.

But it appears Dier is the latest football star to adopt a new accent, with fans joking that the defender has followed the example of McClaren, who went down in football folklore after appearing to mimic a Dutch accent after playing in Moved to FC Twente in 2012.

After the match, the 30-year-old told Sky Sports: ‘(It was) obviously a very proud moment for me to make my debut for this club. It’s a very proud moment for me and my family and I obviously enjoyed it very much.

‘I really enjoy playing here and I am happy to have made my debut here in this stadium. So I’m really happy with the way I’ve settled in and obviously to make my debut and hopefully I can continue to help my team.”

But fans joked on X (formerly Twitter) that Dier had only been in Germany for a short period and had already picked up an accent.

“He’s been there for 3 minutes and 47 seconds and he already has a German accent,” one person wrote.

Another added: “Does Eric Dier always talk like this or is he the next victim of German accent syndrome.”

“He went full Steve McClaren… you never go full Steve McClaren!”

“Fair play to him. Mastered the language after a week!’ said one.

When asked if he thought there were any differences between the Bundesliga and the Premier League, Dier added: ‘It’s difficult for me to say after just 45 minutes. I’m sure I’m starting to understand.

“The audience is obviously a little bit different. The atmosphere is different. Not better or worse. They’re just very different atmospheres. As far as football is concerned, I need more matches to understand it better.

‘But it’s clear that from what I’ve seen on TV and last weekend’s match, every team is technically very good.

‘They all try to play a lot. And there is a very nice style of football here, but as I said, I need more matches to understand it better.’
